What Is Covered by Photographers Insurance?

The cover offered by photographers’ insurance policies varies depending on the company you use and the cost of your premium. As a minimum the cost of replacing your camera equipment should it be stolen, lost or damaged is covered by every photographers’ insurance policy, however you need to check to see if the cover is new for old. If it is new for old then you will get the cost of buying a totally new piece of equipment, if it is not then you will only get a percentage of what you originally paid for that piece of equipment.

In addition most photographers’ insurance policies usually give you some public liability cover and professional indemnity cover.

Which Photographers Insurance Is Right For Me?

Which photographers’ insurance policy is right for you is dependant to a large extent on the kind of photography you do now and plan to do in the future. As a minimum you need to insure your premises and your vehicle against theft or damage. All of your photography equipment also needs to be covered against damage, loss or theft. You also need a photographers insurance policy that provides public liability insurance, so that if you injure someone or cause damage to property whilst working you are covered for legal costs, medical bills and the cost of repairs. For professional photographers professional indemnity is essential.

Other kinds of photographers’ insurance may not be necessary for every photographer, but you should ask yourself if you need this cover as well. Other forms of photographers’ insurance include internet and e-mail liability, commercial legal expenses, personal accident, employer’s liability, business interruption and products liability insurance.

Whether you need this additional cover is sometimes obvious, for example if you always work alone you do not need employer’s liability insurance. Others are wise to have but optional for example it is a good idea to have personal accident cover, so that if you have an accident whilst working you and your family can get financial help while you recover and get fit for work again.
