Experts believe telescopes could detect alien oceans

US Scientists are confident that a new generation of astronomical telescopes will be able to pick up oceans and river systems on other planets.

It is hoped that these telescopes will be able to detect whether there is a possibility of life being sustained on other planets outside of our own solar system. This will help make advancements in the way we understand our own position within other galaxies.

According to an article published by the BBC, scientists in the United States are hoping that the telescopes will soon be able to detect reflections of light or ‘glint’ on other planets. This reflection is similar to the reflection of the sun seen on the sea’s surface when watching a sunset for example.

With a new astronomical telescope due to be finished in the next two years, this prospect is now within closer reach and will possibly help astronomers and scientists find another Earth like planet with the ability to sustain alien life forms.

Speaking to BBC News, Tyler Robinson from the University of Washington in Seattle said: “We are focusing on a class of extra-solar planets yet to be detected, so things comparable in size and composition to the Earth and similar distances from their central star as the Earth is from the Sun.”

This technique of searching for the presence of alien oceans on other planets has already been used when exploring Saturn’s largest moon, Titan. A telescope was able to detect a liquid methane ocean on the moon.

If other rivers or oceans are discovered on other planets this will help scientists discover more about the Earth’s atmosphere and how it interacts with other planets and stars. It may also be used when studying issues such as weather and the temperature of the planet.
