Know your casting

The acting business is inundated with people of all shapes and sizes, and the unfortunate fact is that for every one of you, there are a great deal of other people out there with a similar look. Casting directors have the job of finding the person that fits the physical brief of a part, and to give yourself the best possible chance in audition, you need to make sure that you are putting yourself forward for roles that meet your casting bracket.

For television auditions, your 'casting' is, quite simply, you. Production companies and directors do not have time to experiment with the width of your acting ability. Their interest is primarily on the TV or film project, therefore unless you are particularly established in the business they are unlikely to take a chance by casting a dark-haired, middle class twenty-something female as a blonde, working class woman in her mid thirties. They want to know that you are as close to the character as they can get.

Knowing your casting bracket can be difficult when you want to be able to showcase yourself as an actor. After all 'acting' implies becoming somebody else, not just being yourself. However your physical characteristics are probably suited to a number of different roles, for example if you happen to look slightly eastern-European or Mediterranean. If you are fluent in another language, are particularly good at certain accents or your native accent is different to your general tone, these are all advantages that broaden your casting bracket. The more strings you have to your bow, the more roles you will have open to you.

At Audition Now we can give you information on the latest acting auditions and casting calls, so that you know when and where to be when the time is right.
