How to Take Care of Your Ice Hockey Equipment

Hockey players use a considerable number of hockey equipment. Whether you are a professional player, an amateur or simply a hobbyist who plays hockey just once in a while, you need to take good care of your equipment for them to last longer and save you money along the way. Good quality hockey equipment pieces aren't cheap either, so it would cost you a lot of money if you take the care of your gear for granted. So here are a few pointers to guide you on how to take care of your ice hockey equipment.
1.) Always use skate guards over the blades of your skates whenever you exit the hockey rink. There are various types of skate guards available in the market. Some are made of plastic and some from rubber. Just pick one and use it always. These guards will protect your skate blades from being damaged on hard surfaces. A new pair of skates that is used often and not taken care of can get ruined in just a couple of week's use. Skate guards are very important but you shouldn't leave the guards on the blades if the skates aren't in use or are in storage. The guards are used only when you are using the skates to walk on surfaces other than ice. So always remove them if the skates are currently not being used. If the guards are left attached to the blades, moisture can easily gather and cause rust to form on the blades.
2.) Make it a point to regularly check your hockey sticks for cracks or any other deformities. Have it re-taped if necessary and have it waxed for smooth sliding over the ice when the next hockey game begins. When no longer in use, safely secure the hockey stick in your hockey bag. Make sure though that the stick is thoroughly dried off before you put it in your bag to prevent unnecessary damage caused by water.
3.) Make sure that your hockey clothes and paddings are always dry. A lot of hockey players make the mistake of stuffing their paddings and jerseys into a bag after a game and just leave them there. The paddings and clothes are still damp from the game so, naturally, if they stay in the bag for long, mildew will begin to develop and cause an unpleasant smell and damage to the equipment. Thus, always unpack your hockey bag when you get home and spread out the clothes and equipment to dry out.
4.) Choose and use a tough ice hockey bag – A hockey bag is important to help you keep your equipment organized and stored in one place. Pick one with a lot of appropriate compartments for an easier organizing process.
5.) Clean your hockey equipment regularly - You can use a washing machine to wash shoulder pads, hockey pants, shin guards and gloves. Use soap, water and a rag to clean your helmets.
