Staying Sun Safe in Tenerife

If you are planning your holidays to Tenerife, you are probably looking forward to soaking up some sunshine in this beautiful Canary Islands hotspot. However, overexposure to the sun can cause serious health problems, so don’t forget to be sun safe.

During your holidays to Tenerife, it is very important to keep yourself protected from the damaging effects of the sun. Each time you get severe sunburn, you increase your risk of developing melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Also, sun can damage your skin and make it age prematurely and cause more wrinkles and sunspots.

To avoid the dangerous effects of the sun, here are a few tips for your holidays to Tenerife:

* Wear sunscreen and reapply it frequently. Choose an SPF factor of at least 15, but SPF30 is even better. If you are swimming or exercising and sweating a lot you will need to reapply the sunscreen more often.
* Try to avoid being out in direct sunlight during the peak hours of the day, such as 10am – 3pm. A good rule to go by is that if your shadow is shorter than you are, you should not be spending extended time in direct sunlight.
* Wear a broad brimmed hat, which will not only protect your scalp from burning but will also shade your face from the sun.
* Sit underneath umbrellas on the beach and let them shade you from the direct sunlight.
* Wear a cover-up such as a light long-sleeved t-shirt or a dress over your swimsuit while on the beach to protect your skin.
* Wear sunglasses with UV protection in them to shield your eyes from the damaging rays of UV light.
* Drink a lot of water throughout the day, because the hot sun can dehydrate you and cause sun stroke. If you start to feel dizzy or fatigued from the sunshine or the heat, go to somewhere cool to rest and drink lots of water.
* Be careful about drinking too much alcohol in the hot sunshine, as it will dehydrate you even faster.

Be sun smart and safe during your holidays to Tenerife and your fun will not be ruined by painful sunburn!
