The Purpose of Barcode Scanners
|
You may be under the impression that at Systems Print Media we deal exclusively in printers. This is, in fact, not the case. We are suppliers of all equipment related to label and barcode printers. An example of the devices which we offer is barcode scanners.
Barcode scanners – or barcode readers – are devices which have the capability to track items and packages by reading and identifying their unique barcode. The role of the barcode begins in the warehouse where the products are stored. Using barcode scanners, warehouse workers are able to know exactly when an item comes into the warehouse, where that item is located and when the item eventually leaves the warehouse. Products can be tracked via barcode scanners from the distributor and right through to the recipient of the package.
For consumers, barcode scanners are most noticeably used at the time a product is purchased. When we go shopping, whenever we buy something, whether it be food, clothes, toiletries, etc the shop assistant will usually scan the item at the till using a barcode scanner. This will bring up details of what exactly the product is and the price of the product. This information will be used by the shop to record exactly what and how many products have been bought.
There are two main types of barcode scanners available which are commonly used by businesses. Wireless barcode scanners can be found to be used in warehouses and shipping yards to scan items as they are delivered. Wireless barcode scanners work by reading a barcode and then, after pushing certain buttons, will bring up a description of that particular item. This data then gets transferred from the barcode scanner on to the system at the base station. If barcode scanners had not been invented, warehouse workers would have to manually write down each and every barcode number in order to keep a record of them. This is a fine example of how advancements in technology result in saving a significant amount of time and avoiding human error, thus increasing efficiency and productivity. Wired barcode scanners are used in places where goods are received; for example, in shops (as mentioned previously) but also in mail rooms. When mail is being sorted, if there is a barcode present, this is scanned. The barcode scanner will bring up information regarding where the letter or package needs to be delivered to. By this sort of data being stored on a central system, the recipients can often use the internet in order to track exactly where their item is. With barcode scanners you can wave goodbye to the days of packages getting lost, as each and every movement can now be tracked. |
