Strapping Machines

What are strapping machines and what do they do?

Strapping machines apply a strap to an item to either combine it with another one by fastening them together, or to reinforce it and hold it in place. They are used widely in the packaging industry to help with the transit of commercial products. Any packaging machines which assist with the application of strapping – also known as bunting or banding – are known by this name. Just think about how important strapping is in our current society – where products are shipped all over the world and the internet driving the amount of large items being delivered by post. Owners of shops in particular would find life very difficult without it. For instance imagine your local newsagent if newspapers were not delivered in bundles. Things would be much trickier. Also transporting bulk deliveries of pipes, bricks and other building materials would be precarious to say the least.

Strapping machines secure containers using a variety of materials, depending on the strength needed as well as many other variables. Steel is traditionally used when a high tensile material is necessary, offering substantial strength for heavy duty goods to be secured safely. At the other end of the spectrum there are paper straps. Corded and woven strapping is another heavy duty solution, and if suitable should be used instead of steel – made from fabrics such as polyester and rayon, it gives more adjustability than its metal counterpart, and can often be used again. There are several grades of plastic strapping, which have varying degrees of strength and memory. Polypropylene is commonly used for bundling items of medium weight. However, this can often lose tension at a rapid rate and is also affected by temperature.

Strapping machines are hand held devices which dispense plastic-based strapping tape. They often entail a significant financial outlay, ranging from approximately £1,000 to £6,000, but effectively reduce labour costs as they are much faster and more efficient then strapping products by hand. Therefore firms which have to ship or post substantial numbers of items see them as a worthwhile investment.

Where can I find strapping machines?

It is advisable to go to a specialist supplier if you need something for commercial use. One established name in the packaging machines market is Strapandpacksystems.com, which supplies various types of strapping machines as well as a range of solutions from case sealing and pallet wrapping.
