Elements of theatre
|
Theatre consists of many elements. There is of course the choice of play. Will it be a brand new work, a new adaptation of a classic or a text that has been performed thousands of times before? The director will often work with a theatre designer he knows and trusts and one of the first meetings he will hold once the play is decided upon will be with the designer to discuss the setting, the costumes and other major elements.
There will then follow meetings with sound and lighting departments, wardrobe, make-up and wigs and stage management. There may be a separate props department, particularly if the props list is expected to be long or especially difficult. Often props will be one of the duties for the design or stage management teams. They will refer to specialist props hire companies like us at Keeley Hire.
There will then be a meeting with the casting department or an independent casting director to discuss initial casting breakdowns and to consider whether there are any star names who might be approached and if there are whether they would need to be auditioned or would simply be offered the part.
Once the play starts rehearsing the stage management team really come into their own and an assistant director may also be involved. Between them they will be responsible for the rehearsal timetable and making sure everybody is where they should be at the right time.
The actors will, of course, have a huge effect on the shape of the show but many of the big decisions about the overall design will have been made. The marketing department then starts to get involved as they seek to ensure that all the work that has gone into the production will be rewarded with full houses and good box office receipts, which will guarantee that the whole process can start again.
