Blackout curtains

Most people don't know that blackout curtains have an interesting history. One of the first widely known uses happened during World War II. They were used to stop light from going outside of the room. This way when enemy bombers approached London they were not able to see the city at night time. As you can imagine a city with all of us lights visible would look like a giant bull's-eye. Nowadays blackout curtains or blackout window curtains have a more benign use. They are mostly used for stopping outside light especially sunlight from entering a room.

The places where blackout curtains are most used nowadays are at hospitals, photo studios, science labs, sleep clinics and so on. It can also be used in one's own home. After all, because of their capability of blocking light they offer the ultimate privacy any homeowner can wish for. In hospitals they are generally used between patient’s beds. In this situation these type of curtains can offer privacy for patients. In the world of photography these curtains are used to either block out light completely in a studio or to help manipulate the light. They have the freedom to block out sunlight and create their own artificial lighting.

Blackout curtain drapes are used in sleep clinics for the same reasons. It will help therapists to create an artificial environment for their patients. This is a much better alternative than using a room without any windows. Scientists also use these curtains for the same reason. Sometimes they may be working with sensitive substances that can be harmed by sunlight. The easy solution for this is to use blackout window curtains. So far we have been discussing about scientific uses blackout curtains. But they can also be used for ordinary domestic purposes. Not only that they come in various sizes, styles and colors.

Just because they are called blackout it does not mean they only come in black color. There are various exciting colors to choose from. Apart from blocking out sunlight they act as great insulators. This means you will not have hot or cool air escaping as much. It goes without saying this can help with great savings on your electricity bill. The reason for this is because they are made from materials that are thick with several different layers. Blackout curtains are capable of reducing the escaping of hot or cool air by as much as 25%.
