Should We Still Propose?

We think of marriage proposals as being something that people have been doing for centuries, but proposals as we know them have only really been around for a number of decades. And as our culture changes, so do the ways in which people come together to decide to marry. From the arranged marriages of yesteryear to the spur of the moment Vegas strip weddings of today, marriage proposals as we know them seem to actually occupy only a small number of the historical ways to find oneself betrothed.
But with traditions changing all the time, and with equal rights such a prominent thing today, are such marriage proposals still as important as they once were or is it far more sensible to simply do away with the histrionics and talk about such ideas rationally in a more subdued manner?
Ultimately, there are now far more ways to go about bringing up ideas of marriage and many women don’t expect to be wooed in the same way with outlandish gestures and surprise engagement rings, but that doesn’t mean that the gesture doesn’t still have a great place in our society. In fact, since it is no longer expected, the whole process of picking out diamond rings and presenting them in an elaborate and romantic way will probably be far more appreciated.
However, it will of course change for every couple. You may believe that your partner would prefer to choose their own engagement rings or you may even have an inkling that they would rather be the one to ask the question, but either way the traditional proposal will still have a great deal of impact for many. So, if you know that you have found the one, make sure she knows. Get those diamond rings and think of the perfect words to let her know that you want to spend your life with her. |
