Is it Time for New Shelves?

We are all guilty of not changing our home furnishings as much as we should. But whilst a tatty sofa may redeem its charm and comfort even into old age, our storage solutions will often not be quite so forgiving once they pass their sell by date.

The problem with shelving is that not only will our needs change far more drastically over time than we might realise, but also, in many instances, the units we have in our homes weren’t even the right ones to begin with. There is far more to choosing a unit than simply looks, ranging from functionality through to the actual size and shape being suitable for the space they are in.

However, as things change gradually, we often don’t realise that we have something that is totally ineffectual until we realise each shelf is crammed full, and the house is in turn a total mess. Not having the right shelving can be a major reason why houses end up seeming impossible to keep tidy as, unless each item has its own place and one that is suitable for it to be stored in, things will simply end up living wherever they happen to be used last. In turn, tidying becomes an impossible task.

Therefore, it is always worth looking at your current storage solutions and working out whether they are adequate. First of all, tidy out anything that is no longer needed and avoid hoarding things for the sake of it. Next, look at the units that you have and see if space is being used effectively or not, as if areas are overfull or simply not able to be used due to space constraints, you are almost certainly due a chance.

Finally, check to make sure that the solutions you have aren’t wasting floor space. If different shaped or sized units will be able to help you maximise space or incorporate recesses and alcoves, then again it is almost certainly time to change.
