Women in IT 'believe they are subject to pay discrimination'

These days, there are laws in place designed to prevent sex discrimination in the workplace. However, many people are yet to be convinced that such legislation is working as well as it ought to. For example, some women believe their remuneration packages are not as generous as the ones given to their male colleagues.

To make their jobs easier, many firms outsource their HR payroll issues to payroll companies. This helps ensure they stay within the legal boundaries.

However, a recent poll of female IT workers conducted by Intellect revealed that half did not believe their pay was equal. The organisation's Perceptions of Equal Pay Survey found that 14 per cent of respondents were certain they were not being paid equally, while 36 per cent believed this to be the case but did not have evidence to support it.

Also, the number of female employees who were certain their pay is comparable had dropped from 15 per cent in 2008 to 11 per cent last year.

One of those polled stated: "Having worked in IT for almost ten years I can categorically state that I am still earning much less than many male counterparts. In my last job men with the same level of industry experience were earning double what I was, and I was constantly refused training that I requested while they were not."

She went on to claim that the negative impact this has had on her career prospects has left her unsure whether she wishes to remain in the industry.

Meanwhile, another respondent suggested that pay is very much dependent on people's immediate managers. She added that while her current boss is very supportive, previous managers did discriminate against women.

In order to avoid potentially costly and embarrassing legal action, businesses can outsource their HR functions to expert providers. For example, they can delegate their HR payroll issues to payroll companies.
