Choosing The Right Flat Roof Materials

Flat roofs can be subject to leaks and damage caused by a number of factors but especially because they do not enjoy the natural drainage that is offered with sloped roof. Water collects and does not have anywhere to run to. Pooled water, ice, and even the sun’s rays can damage a flat roof if it does not use the most appropriate flat roof materials to cover it. A property is meant to last a lifetime so why shouldn’t your flat roofing system last the same time?

Felt, bitumen, and asphalt are all subject to the same weather conditions as EPDM, or Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, but they are unable to withstand the heat, the sun’s rays, the rain, or ice in the same way. These weather conditions are certainly not unusual but after just a few years the typical flat roof will begin to show signs of stress. Unfortunately, this stress often manifests itself in the shape of a leaking roof which can cause even greater damage to the ceiling and to the room below.

EPDM however, does not even need covering and it will last for decades. It is resistant to the UV rays from the sun and is resilient to rain, ice, and other weather conditions. Considering it is safer to install and also a lot more resilient to physical damage it’s little wonder that EPDM is considered the best of flat roofing materials.

Buying cheap flat roofing materials is a false economy. They will need replacing regularly and you will continue to pay every time your flat roof needs repairs. In contrast, while EPDM may cost a little more to install, it will require less maintenance and is guaranteed for 20 years with some early takers still using the same effective flat roofing materials 50 years later.

Providing a stable and effective flat roof is important. Flat roofs are usually found on extensions, kitchens, or garages and if they leak then it can prove extremely costly indeed. EPDM flat roof materials are used because of the strength and resistance that they offer as well as their natural good looks.
