Public transport and personal injury risk

Though most of us are aware of the need to put our safety first by wearing a seatbelt whilst in our own car or as a passenger, many people do not properly consider the risks associated with travelling by public transport. For instance, although it has been law since 2001 for coaches to be fitted with seatbelts, public buses do not fall under this legislation. Therefore if a bus turns a sharp bend or brakes suddenly, you could be vulnerable to sustaining an injury by falling from your seat.

Similarly, there is no such seatbelt protection on trains, and although we believe that the nature of rail travel makes it relatively safe from accidents, there are incidences where trains can become derailed or crash into an object obstructing the track. Even when travelling by taxi, many people do not wear a seatbelt and therefore are at risk of personal injury should the driver have an accident.

If you are injured whilst travelling by public transport, you are entitled to make accident claims against the operator or operating company concerned. The firm whose vehicles you are using have a duty of care to protect your safety, and driver negligence that results in you becoming hurt is a breach of that bond.

Accident compensation will not only cover any financial outlay for the initial pain you have suffered, but it could also contribute towards the cost of ongoing medical care such as physiotherapy. If you were forced to take unpaid leave from work due to health problems resulting from the accident, accident claims can also cover the wages that you have been denied.

The first step towards claiming financial accident compensation for a public transport sustained injury is to contact a professional firm such as ours at Claims Solicitors, as we can advise on the strength of your claim.
