Top 4 Server Rack Layout Rules For the Best Results

The server rack is as important as your hardware in any modern server room setting. It has become an indispensable tool for proper server management from large to small companies. However, before using these racks for your servers, it is necessary that you manage them properly for best results.

One of the most important things to keep in mind while deciding on your server rack management is following the rules of rack layout. This is because an improper rack deployment would result in messy cables, which hamper in your work output. Improper or lackadaisical server rack layout may also result in unwarranted accidents in the server room that may destroy life and property. Follow these rules for great results:

Datacenter Hot and Cold Sides

Always make sure to follow the hot side and cold side instructions while installing a server rack. I recommend that you should position the hot side in such a place from where a majority of the hot air leaves the rack. It is to be mentioned here that this takes place in the rear side of the servers. On the other hand, the cold side is generally located at the front panel of the server.

Rack Rail Positioning

Quality server racks have rack rails that allow you to adjust them front to back. This allows you to accommodate the deepest servers, provided your cabinet is the correct depth. Some racks have three sets of rails in case you have two depths you need to mount.

Switch Position

It is very important to place the required switches in proper position. While placing them on the top may reduce their accessibility and visibility, positing in lower levels risks in the connectors being accidentally pulled or disconnected. Again, mounting them in the middle may hinder in the process of removal once power rails and cables are installed in the event of switch failure.

Hence, it is suggested that the switches should be located clear of other equipment within the top three RUs of the rack.

Cable Distribution

Cable management is very important to obtain the benefit from a server rack or computer rack. You should always keep the cables in a device which can channel the network cables out to the edge of the rack. Additionally, to make the cables more traceable, you should always label them at both the ends. This also applies when you are using rackmount powerstrips.

Always make a note to manage your server rack layout for better efficiency and avoid mishaps. Good luck with your server room layout!
