Nurture the Bond: Making the Best of Best Friends

When folks talks about recapturing the “spark” in their relationship, they’re usually about to begin a monologue about how things “used to be” with their romantic partner. But what about the long-suffering companions they’re complaining to? Once a cohort on endless nights out, partner in crime throughout student years, maybe even preferred other half through anti-Valentine’s Days 1989-2006, the best friend relationship – once the most central in their world – has likely undergone less than perfect maintenance.

Why Bother?
Life is all about relationships. They define who a person is; they are mirror, consol, help, advisor and nurturing hand. Like a really great Birkin tote, a best friend can last a lifetime! The saying goes that for every new serious love interest a leading lady meets, two supporting characters will fall by the wayside. Few enjoy the privilege of a friend group at aged fifty identical to that aged five, but that “best” friend relationship forged over the sandpit is worth a little investment, isn’t it?

Creating “Us” Time
Scheduling conflicts? Busy lives, careers and family considerations often see time spent with friends lost to the sea of Maybe Next Week. But it IS important to set aside time to enjoy a friendship and work on its strengths and weaknesses. Consider something off the wall like a tango show or dance class. Dance classes in London, for example, are incredibly numerous and diverse. Admittedly this sounds a little overly dance-themed, but the idea is to take up something that encourages the casting off of daily shackles of propriety. Rock climbing, training for a tango show, karaoke, improvisation acting class, weekly rollerblade sessions in Hyde Park, dance classes in London – find an activity that’s fun, challenging and 100% exclusive to the bond of best friends (no bringing kids or dates!)
