The Evolution of O- Rings


O-Rings are a wonderful invention of the 21st Century and were invented in the year 1932 by Niels Christensen. From its humble beginnings where it was used for various simple applications like vacuum seals and piping , modern specialty O-Rings have progressed to a stage where they have found use on space shuttles in orbit and numerous other applications which could never have been imagined in the 1930's.

Modern specialty O-Ring kits have remarkable physical and mechanical properties and can withstand thousands of pounds of pressure. Many O-Rings are capable of operation in temperatures ranging from -200 to +250 degrees centigrade. O-Rings have also found their way into the modern semiconductor industry. Various semiconductor O-Rings are used for special sealing applications ranging from vacuum metal deposition to laser lithography operations for silicon chip manufacture.

Teflon (PTFE) Coated O-Rings are highly specialized products designed for industrial and engineering applications which require a high level of corrosion and chemical absorption resistance. Teflon (PTFE) Coated O-Ring modules are used in cryogenic material handling, where temperatures can regularly reach -200 Degrees centigrade below normal. The Teflon coatings on these O-Rings provide good thermal insulation and help these O-Rings perform as intended in these extreme conditions.

Hygenic O-Rings have found widespread in the food and drug manufacturing industries as they use non toxic materials during their manufacture. These O-Rings are used in food processing, medical formulation creation and various other applications. The O-Ring has evolved a great deal from its initial creation in the 1930's and has made its presence felt in every imaginable mechanical application in existence today.
