Choosing the right baby bottle for your newborn
|
Congratulations on your new baby boy or girl! Or maybe twins! Either way, if you're opting to forgo breastfeeding and instead give them formula in a bottle, your best bet is to now do some research on what kind of baby bottle to buy. And it's not as easy as you think ,either.
If you are like my wife and I, then you know that there's a ton of work that goes into having babies. Between the choice of Pampers or Huggies, Graco or Chicco, or even plastic versus glass, the decision making can be overwhelming. That's why I'm going to impart some knowledge into what we think goes into your decision making process of what kind of bottle to use.
Ultimately we choose a combination of both glass and plastic. We were given a bunch of glass 4 oz bottles to use by Evenflo that our new born Ava took to it quickly. Not only did we like the feel and weight of the glass bottles better, but they took to the dishwasher better as well. We were given some advice about Dr Browns, Avant and evenflo, that at the time it came down to price point. Plus, we liked the nipple attachments for the evenflo as well. But like anything else, Ava started to outgrow her first set of bottles, so we tried a plastic set next, that went up to 8oz's.
Now we had Avant and Dr. Brown's in the house. And Ava definitely took to Dr. Brown at this point because of lack of backflow and the ease of sucking on the nipple of the bottle. We found better eating control with the long, skinny bottles as opposed to the fat round ones. Plus, washing them in the dishwasher was just fine, just don't let the used bottles sit around to long. That stuff starts to smell bad after a period of time!
So at the end of the day, the choice of bottle came down to price, who gave us what bottles to use, and then ultimately the baby herself. She nursed better on the wider nipple and bottle than others. Plus, we've been using plastic bottles now after 9 months and don't see us purchasing any glass bottles in the future. I'm sure you can read some articles on the affects of BPA in plastics and a newborns digestive tracts, but we didn't find any of those issues at all. But as always, consult your pediatrician if that is concern. Good luck! |
