An Inkling of What’s To Come

There have been many cases over the years of printer manufacturers attempting to file infringement suits against companies offering compatible versions of their ink cartridges at much lower prices. With another, high-profile case about to hit the courts in the States, it’s about time someone asked what all the fuss is about.

There is a huge market in selling compatible ink cartridges not created by the printer’s original manufacturer. The prices are usually a fraction of those of the originals and so long as they are purchased from reputable companies, the quality is usually just as good.

The question is, if the compatibles are so cheap, why can’t the manufacturers offer printer ink at a similar price? The answer is simple – people are willing to pay for a name. Prestige purchasing is common in all aspects of commerce, whether it be designer labels in fashion or visiting a more upscale supermarket for your weekly groceries. A name inspires confidence and therefore the prices can be raised high above what is necessary. In this case though, that might not be the only reason.

The printers they sell are often extremely cheap, and therefore much of the company’s profit may well come from the sale of their other products, such as printer ink. However, by consistently bringing the existence of compatible products into the spotlight and quite often losing the high-court battles, the manufacturers may run the risk of highlighting the issue that their pricing is strategically skewed. They also offer the compatible companies the chance to prove their products are high-class produce and offer quality akin to that of the manufacturers.

Should the manufacturers lose another case, people might be even less inclined than before to pay over-the-odds for a product that other companies are proving is much cheaper to make than they say.
