The Great Google Nexus S - A Close Look At The Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS

As far as talking point go, the new Nexus Handset from Google has plenty of them, including its new contour display and NFC capabilities that effectively turn the handset into a debit card. For the everyday user however, there is one factor that makes this phone stand out amongst the competition, the fact its is the UKs first device running on the eagerly awaited Gingerbread version of the popular Android operating system. So exactly how does this new version differ from those that went before it?

As one would expect from any update, the 2.3 Android platform found on the Google Nexus S is the fastest version to date, helping to ensure that the overall user experience encountered on this phone in unrivalled. Other improvements may not seem drastic on there own, but ad them together and they equally a pretty decent overall effort. One new feature that could be of use to many users is the platforms support for VOIP services. This stands for "voice over internet protocol", which basically enables users to conduct calls via an internet connection rather than relying upon a cellular network. Thus when connected to a wifi network, providing you have a SIP account you can make calls to other mobiles with a similar account. The advantage of this method to the user is that because you are utilising the internet, there is no cost to the call as the cost of the broadband connection has already been paid. Systems such as this could prove potentially massive in the future, especially with more and more people adopting technology that incorporates such features. Whilst on the subject of the internet, the Nexus S can act as a portable WiFi hotspot. Thanks to the new operating , up to six peripheral units such as laptops can be connected to the phone, enabling all of these to access the net via the phone.

In terms of the look of the interface, Android have certainly upped there game with this version, and the high quality screen on the Google Nexus S is the perfect platform on which to show off these changes. A new notification bar alerts you to anything incoming that me be of interest such as an e mail or Facebook update. The virtual keypad you use to compose text messages has been overhauled, with improved responsiveness and enhanced predictive text. As well as features such as this that will be functional from the start, the unit also sports some features for the future. The best example of the is the NFC facilities which effectively allows your phone to be used like a credit or debit card.

The Android update looks to deliver the welcomed changes that consumers expected, and the Google Nexus S is the best poised handset to take advantage of initial demand being the first device to come shipped with the operating system.
