Disadvantages of Wind Energy

There are good bits and bad bits about lots of green technologies although people usually prefer to discuss the main benefits of renewable power sources. There are, for instance, disadvantages of wind energy that you should be aware of before investing in a wind-powered system. On the average, wind energy can be transformed into electricity with the help of wind turbines. Wind power will be converted into electricity by the use of an electrical generator in the system.

The number of turbines is the main problem with a wind-powered system. The cost of the wind turbines is really high, and even if the electricity bill gets really low, it takes time to cover for the initial investment. The turbines are totally green, yet they can be very noisy, and thus they turn into a disturbing factor in inhabited areas. In some people's opinion this is the biggest of all disadvantages of wind energy. Wind speed and intensity lack constancy, which is another major downside. Wind power is more efficiently produced in coastal areas than in inland regions, and even better out at sea on floating platforms.

This variability reduces the reliability of wind as a major power source in urban areas for instance. Wind is efficient as a source of energy in isolated locations with obstacles. Even the distance becomes a problem because of the transfer of electricity by transmission lines.

Some critical voices even reproach the unsightliness of wind farms. Yet, such disadvantages of wind energy seem far-fetched if we consider the fact that renewable energy is worth the aesthetic sacrifice. Another downside that sounds a bit exaggerated is that wind turbines kill birds when they spin at high speeds. The available data does not allow us to draw a conclusion in this respect, that's for sure.

The interference with television reception is one more of the disadvantages of wind energy that you can frequently read about in online materials. Although this is not a general case, some people have reported interferences with the radio and TV signals because of the wind turbines nearby. This issue also requires further investigation in order to clarify the exact nature of the TV or radio signal problems. It is best to address the specialist to sort this out!
