Art Styles: Learn the Basics and Become an Instant Expert in Arts

Just how can you distinguish one art style from the others? There're so many Art Styles and forms but not enough to make you appreciate art. You can help yourself toggle anything about art by simply learning the basics. By learning the basics you are actually arming yourself with information that can help you comprehend what those tour guides are talking about.
Different Art Styles
Primitivism - This is the easiest style of art, everybody is not exempted from this. It is characterized by as two dimensional crude drawings of children.
Realism - Realism is an Art Style which shows things exactly as they appear in real life. Its origins can be traced back in the 18th century, but the greatest Realist era was in the mid-19th century or during the Renaissance Period. Most Realists were from France and Italy and other famous American painters who were Realists too.
Surrealism – the idea of Surrealism is to create a painting based on dreams; how dreams are seen by a dreamer. Paintings often contain objects which are similarly seen in a dream to make it look bizzare. Surrealists aim to produce an emotional feedback from people and see things differently. They thought that their paintings or art works might stir up feelings in the back of people's minds. These types of paintings somehow bring about moods and emotions that help the person looking at the painting understand it.
Impressionism – paintings made in this style was deliberately made to look "shimmering" like the reflection of a landscape on the surface of a lake. The details are blurred into a mixture of colors and the edge unrefined. Famous Impressionists are Monet and Renoir.
Expressionism – From the name itself, this style is made to bring out a certain type of emotion from its viewer. Usually, the artist's emotions are "poured-out" into the painting and it reflects his character. Paintings like this can be sad, happy, angry, or with different types of feelings shown on the faces and shades of the colors used.
Cubism – In cubism the artist's aim is to create a intricate picture using geometrical figures. This is said to be the early forms of Abstract art. The early works which adopted this style used only 2 sets of color to distinguish the shape and features in the painting.
Abstract – Abstact art comes in different forms, Art Styles and even shapes. Sometimes it's meant to be non-objective. It may show emotions and moods which the artist is trying to reflect. Unlike cubism, Abstract can come as "without-a-theme". It is mainly a full blown expression using colors and strokes that appeal to a unique sense of style.
Pop Art – this type of art does not necessarily need to be a painting or pencil drawing. It is the every day life of people and symbols of things and events which are transformed into a colorful imagery of how the artists perceive it.
There are other different Art Styles out there most of which are a latter invention of pop culture. The mentioned styles above are the most common forms of arts seen in galleries and museums. The best thing about knowing the styles used to develop a certain art work is that you get to appreciate it better than you did before. |
