Honing Equipment

A novice guide to Honing Equipment

I was asked to write an article about Honing Equipment the other day. To be honest, I’d never even heard of Honing Machines before. It was daunting to say the least, but ever one to thrive in the face of adversity, I readily accepted the challenge.

My first step was to work out what exactly Honing Equipment was. A little research was required and I found plenty of subject matter on Honing Equipment. It would seem the term honing refers to a type of metalworking, or to be more specific, it’s an abrasive machining process that produces a precision surface on metalwork, particularly on engine cylinders and gears. Now that’s quite a mouthful, and for someone as technically inept as me, I just about got the gist of honing.

The way I see it, people use Honing Equipment to improve the surface of a metal object, whether for quality purposes or to improve the accuracy on cylinder bores. As for the types of Honing Equipment that are needed to complete the process, they consist of honing heads, specialist stones and adhesives.

How does Honing Equipment work?

A multi-edge tool known as a honing head is fitted with honing stones and this revolves at a set rate. As the Honing Equipment rotates it steadily cuts the metal surface whilst gently smoothing at the same time. It’s a precision-perfect process and operators of Honing Equipment produce an exceptional quality of finish.

There’s a host of automotive parts that are machined using Honing Equipment including cylinder blocks, cylinder liners and of course a range of gears. Honing Machines are used in conjunction with items of equipment in controlled workshop settings.

The types of industries that might use Honing Equipment

Used throughout the automotive industry, Honing Equipment is also used by cylinder specialists and anyone who manufactures or works on cylinders of any capacity. As well as large companies and global organisations, Honing Equipment is also use by smaller companies and it’s not just professionals that operate Honing Machines, versions are available for DIY mechanics and people that work on engines in their own garages.

Now I’m no expert on Honing Equipment, but I know more about the process thanks to doing a little research on the subject. Information about how to hone cylinders is readily available on the internet along with details of suppliers who sell a diverse range of Honing Equipment.
