Chair Caning
|
A few weeks ago I went to an auction and bought a beautiful Georgian mahogany armchair. The detail on it is magnificent, with lovely scrolled arms and delicately turned legs. The seat and back had woven cane on them but unfortunately they were ripped and in need of new chair caning, otherwise the chair was in great condition. As beautiful as the chair was, if I didn’t find somebody who was competent in chair caning, I wouldn’t be able to sit in the chair. I imagined that the number of people who could do chair caning would be small.
So, the day after the auction, I began my quest to find somebody who could do chair caning. I obviously began by typing “chair caning” into Google, and some companies did come up, but I had no idea if they were any good or not. Fortunately I have a friend who knows quite a lot about the restoration of antiques, and he told me about somebody he had used for chair caning. This was such a relief, because I always like to use somebody upon a recommendation, rather than using pure guess work.
The name of the chair caning company that I went to was www.grieco.co.uk. The man I spoke to was the third generation in his family to be in the chair caning business, which I thought was very impressive. It is one of those ancient crafts which I’m sure they don’t teach at many places. He took my beautiful Georgian chair and within a couple of weeks he had returned it to me fully restored. The workmanship of the chair caning was second to none, it really was very impressive. So, if ever you find yourself in a similar predicament, I thoroughly recommend that you use the same company that I did.
