People 'tempted to sell cars due to rising petrol prices'

Running cars has never been a cheap thing to do, yet consumers often prefer to have them because of the convenience they provide.

For some, not owning a vehicle would mean they were unable to get to work or were otherwise isolated.

However, as the cost of motoring increases, more people are being tempted to seek cash for cars by selling them.

According to a report on Thisisgloucestershire, a rising number of individuals will sell cars over coming months because of prices at the petrol pumps.

It cited figures produced by the Retail Motor Industry Independent Petrol Retailers Association, which suggested the cost of fuel could rise by a further 25 per cent by January.

This could see a litre of petrol being priced at 125.9p in the new year.

One of those who may be seeking cash for cars is electrical engineer David Cross, who commutes to Cheltenham from Churchdown five days a week.

He revealed he is considering using public transport instead.

Mr Cross stated: "If the petrol price just keeps on going up and up, I'm going to have to think about [getting the bus]. It is getting ridiculous and soon there will just be no way I can justify paying for it."

Meanwhile, IT worker Jon Clarke, who travels from Cheltenham to Tewkesbury each day, concurred.

He noted: "It's another nail in the coffin. You don't tend to notice the increases because they are gradual, but when you sit back and take it in, the rises are quite shocking."

The 33-year-old pointed out that it costs him around £200 a month to travel to his place of work, which is "far too much".

And the cost of refuelling is not likely to fall as oil stocks diminish and the government seeks to incentive other, more eco-friendly means of transport by implementing measures such as raising fuel duty.
