BMX: not just about keeping up appearances

When buying a complete BMX bike or customising a BMX bike from a range of different parts it is often tempting to make buying decisions solely on looks and appearances. There are, however, subtle differences in the BMX products available in the market, and selecting the right ones can give a rider some clear advantages.

It is easy to see why choosing BMX parts based on looks alone has such an appeal. In a competitive market, aesthetics can become the dominant purchasing incentive. BMX parts and BMX bike manufacturers have not been slow to cotton on to this and they know that sharp, eye-catching designs can give them the edge over rival BMX companies. As a consequence there has arguably never been such a range of stunning-looking products, from designer frames right down to fluorescent handle bar stems and wheel sprockets.

There are however still some very basic technical differences between some of the available BMX parts.

Within the frame itself, for example, it is not just variations in the length of the top tube that can give a BMX bike a different feel. Length is also a significant factor in the rear tube or chain stay. A shorter chain stay can enable the rider to turn more quickly, whilst a longer chain stay provides the rider with greater control and stability. Similar improved turning speeds can be achieved with a steeper head tube angle.

Angle variations can also have an impact on handlebars with many riders arguing that buying handlebars with an unsuitable built-in angle or sweep can lead to wrist injuries.

Such technical and handling variations can of course be difficult to distinguish. It is therefore advisable to buy BMX products from a reputable specialist BMX supplier. At BMX our experienced experts will be happy to guide the buyer through the various options available.
