Plans afoot to construct new BMX facilities

BMX bikes can be seen in action in streets and parks around the country. However, a rising number of people now have access to special tracks that enable them to develop their skills.

One area that does not yet have such provisions is Tamworth, but campaigners are battling hard to turn this situation around. According to reports in the Tamworth Herald, a bid to build a new BMX track in the Staffordshire town progressed recently after those behind the idea unveiled their plans.

Tamworth BMX Racing Club revealed its intention to develop the sport in the area over a period of five years.

Among those supporting the move is local councillor Rob Pritchard. He went on record to say: "This project is a great opportunity for local children. It is essential there are activities available for them and many are asking me for a BMX track. With BMX becoming an Olympic sport, it will only become more popular."

The facility is being recommended for a site near the Torc Campus in Glascote Heath.

A report has been sent to the local authority's corporate scrutiny committee, which is reviewing the proposals. In it, proponents stated: "The site is perfect for the proposed competition race track and with the facilities already on the site at the campus and the facilities available at the nearby Athletics Club, it would be one of the best BMX race tracks in the country."

They went on to suggest that few tracks in the UK could match the combination of a great location, facilities and a race track. Indeed, they believe it would be able to stage major race events for those competing on BMX bikes.

The plans have been set out in considerable detail and, if they go ahead, they will be rolled out in various stages. It is hoped that the project would be completed in the year 2015.
