It is a winter sport that appeals to both men and women. Invented in 1965 by Sherman Poppen, the early snowboards bore simple designs and looked like two adjoined skis. Through time, more modern designs have been developed and now allow various riding styles.

The Burton Snowboards by Jake Burton Carpenter were created in the later part of the 70's. Now, the company has become a reputed manufacturer of snowboarding gear, clothing, and boards.

There are two popular styles in riding the snowboard. They are called free ride or freestyle and carving or alpine. There are different sets of equipment meant for use for each of the styles.

Nowadays, international competitions are being held. Among the included events are boardercross, halfpipe, parallel giant slalom, and the slopestyle, to name a few.

It was in the year 2000 that the sport popularized in the United States.

It debuted in the Nagano, Japan Olympics in the year 1998 and then returned to the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in the year 2002.
