Treatment for ED

What is ED?

ED stands for erectile dysfunction, also known as "male impotence." It is a sexual dysfunction wherein the male is unable to have an erection or maintain an erection long enough to have sexual satisfaction.

What causes ED?

Erectile dysfunction has a number of causes. The causes can be divided into two main categories: physical and psychological. In organic causes, erectile dysfunction occurs because of a problem within the body itself. Causes like diabetes, neuropathy, hypogonadism, and cardiovascular diseases are all causes which are organic in nature. Psychological causes of ED on the other hand arise from the person having emotional or mental problems which prevents them from having an erection.

Are there any treatments for ED?

Erectile dysfunction caused by insufficient blood flow is treated by a number of FDA-approved drugs such as Viagra (sildenafil,) Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil). There are also otc drugs which are commonly called Viagra without prescription. These drugs work by inhibiting phospodiastrase type 5, more commonly known as PDE5 , which is a type of enzyme that decreases production of cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate), a substance produced in the body which regulates blood flow.

For hormonal imbalance or deficiencies, testosterone supplements may be used. Psychotherapy and counseling may also be given to individuals suffering from erectile dysfunction because of psychological causes.

Other treatments akin to Viagra without prescription

Other treatments which works like Viagra but which doesn't need prescription include: alternative medicine such as: gingko, zinc, ginseng root, and niacin. Sufferers may also opt to choose a cheap alternative such as aerobic exercise; which is known to increase blood flow.

The option of Viagra without prescription

By June of next year (2011), Pfizer's patent on the drug Viagra would expire, allowing other drug manufacturers to manufacture generic version of the drug. Generic Viagra is definitely cheaper than its brand-name counterpart by as much as 500%.

Dosage

Drugs such as Viagra are produced in 25, 50, and 100 milligrams tablets which should be taken once per day about 30 minutes up to 4 hours before sexual intercourse.

Contraindications

Viagra should not be taken when the individual has the following conditions: liver or renal dysfunction, cardiovascular disorders, hypotension (low blood pressure), a recent stroke or heart attack, and hereditary disorders of the eye. Individuals taking in substances such as organic nitrates should also avoid taking Viagra.

Side effects of Viagra and drugs like it

The most common side-effects of Viagra include headaches, colds, blurred vision, and dyspepsia. Rare side-effects such as severe hypotension, heart attacks, stroke, hearing loss, and priapism have been reported to happen.

Non-pharmacological treatments

Other treatments which do not involve the use of drug include:
- penile implants – penile implants or penile prosthesis involves inserting artificial rods into the penis
- vacuum or penis pumps – vacuum pumps helps draw blood to the penis through negative pressure. There are a number of vacuum pumps available which are FDA-approved and can be bought with a prescription.
