Renew Your Spirit in South India with Kerala Backwater Tours

God’s Own Country- These words ring a bell which goes by the name of Kerala. Kerala is a jewel of pure nature in its most divine form befitting its place in southern India. A thin strip of land between the Arabian Sea and Western Ghats, Kerala is a perfect place to visit for a quiet getaway. Though the entire state is an excellent tourist experience, the emerald rests with the backwaters of Kerala.

The backwaters of Kerala are beautifully architecture by the flowing rivers, canals which form lagoons nurturing the nearby rice paddies and coconut groves. The sleek houseboats efficiently glide through these backwater highways bringing the perfect home experience on the calm waters. If you’re a low-key traveller intending to reach into the village life, then a canoe is your best ticket. There are many places to choose from along the entire range of backwaters of Kerala stretching all across the coast.

A good way to start the backwaters tour is to visit the town of Alappuzha. Alappuzha is well connected through many canal networks to nearby places which make really good tourist places. A range of sizes and shapes are available while choosing your transport at Alappuzha – houseboats, motorboats and canoes. Set against the backdrop of panoramic paddy fields, silent network of meandering canals and coconut lagoons, Alappuzha and nearby areas offer a firsthand look of coastal Kerala. One could spot Kingfisher birds perched on anchors and feeding on fish. The canal network of Vembanad Lake offers a brilliant sightseeing opportunity for wildlife and an insight into the local lifestyle and cultures. One could wander off in tiny canals and reach the villages. Coir making techniques, ethnic cuisine including a platter of fish delicacies and toddy – the natural liquor made from coconut are a few things worth stopping for.

An alternative to Alappuzha is the Ashtamudi backwater stretch of Kollam. Kollam is a quieter place than Alappuzha. More unspoilt and cleaner than the usual touristy places, Kollam seems more like an authentic Indian town without the usual baggage of being a touristy place. The Department of Tourism Promotion (DTPC) offers a range of packages to choose from – from spending a single night on the houseboats to obtaining a multi-day stay with added sightseeing options to choose from. Kollam is the place you want to visit if you want to indulge in lavish cabins with king-sized beds, a crew to attend to your needs and the best local delicacies accompanied by evening Kathakali performances.

While the central and southern parts of Kerala are more frequently visited, the northern backwaters offer a charm of their own which is accentuated by the fact that most of the locations here are still very virgin. Valiyaparamba is one of the most scenic backwater stretches in Kerala. Fed by four rivers and dotted with numerous little islands amidst mangroves, Valiyaparamba proves as a very tranquil place. Adjoining are the Padanna backwaters boasting of the Oyster Opera retreat. This resort has been started to boost oyster cultivation in the region. Devoid of any modern sophistication, Padanna is still definitely a must-see. Nearby is the Parassinikkudavu temple famous for it unique rituals of Theyyam which induce a trance.

The vast stretches of Kerala backwaters provide an excellent touring opportunity. Kerala boasts of a perfect climate all year round and is well connected to all major cities in India by air, rail and roadways. So, at your next free spell from work, plan a trip to this heavenly place!
