Landscape Photography Ideas for Taking Impressionistic and Abstract Pictures

If you've been taking photographs of landscapes for , you might want to start experimenting by trying │attempting different styles of photography such as abstract and impressionistic. Impressionistic photographs can be described as unreal or hyper-real as they are not simply pictures of a landscape but have been manipulated to give the photographer's impression of the scene rather than his literal representation of it. Abstract photos, on the other hand, may no longer be as landscapes since the photographer emphasizes the shapes and forms of the elements in the scene when he composes his picture. In this style of photography, there is no attempt to present a clear representation of the landscape. If you would like to experiment with │try out these two styles, here are some landscape photography ideas can you can try next time you're out with your camera.

One of the most common techniques used both in impressionistic and abstract photography is selective focus. In this technique, a certain │particular part of the scene is selected as the focal point, and it is by producing a narrow depth of field, which causes details in the foreground to come into focus while the background become blurry. You can emphasize the focal point further by using elements such as lines to lead the viewer's eye to it.

Impressionistic and abstract landscape photography ideas also use contrast to emphasize a particular detail of a scene or enhance the forms in an image. For example, an impressionistic photo of a seascape can use the vivid │bright green of the grass on an island in the foreground to contrast with the tranquility of the sea in the background. Or an abstract photo can use the interplay │relationship between light and shadows in a photo taken at dusk to reduce the trees in a forest to their basic shapes.

The point of view or angle at which the picture is taken │shot can also be an important technique for both impressionistic and abstract photographers. For example, a photographer can climb a hill to take a picture of a forest canopy in which the tops of the trees look like a sea of leaves with a mountain in the background. Or an abstract photographer can lie on the ground at dusk and take a of a tree branch silhouetted against the setting sun. They can also emphasize the shapes they see in their landscape such as curving paths or the line of a mountain range on the horizon in order to create images.

Finally, abstract photographers do not limit │restrict their landscape photography ideas merely to what pictures they can take through their cameras. They also use image manipulation software │programs such as Photoshop to play with the picture further. Or they can print a negative image in order to further remove the representational visual quality of the picture and focus on the form of the object they are photographing.

There are many other landscape photography ideas and techniques the landscape photographer can experiment with. All they need is to open their imaginations and free themselves from the mindset │attitude that they have to present a literal representation of the scene in their photos.
