Flowers to be used to brighten up town

Flowers come in an array of sizes, shapes and colours and many have delicate and intoxicating aromas. Because of these qualities, they have been handed out by people as gifts throughout much of human history.
Such flora can brighten up rooms, gardens and even clothing. As such, the services of florists are often in high demand.
Whether they are handed out for particular occasions or are bought or grown for general admiration, they are an integral part of our society.
One town that is set to take even greater advantage of flowers is Winchcombe.
A local councillor is making plans to ensure that the area is more welcoming by next spring.
Gill Quinn and her volunteer 'greening group' has been transforming open spaces in the town by planting a range of troughs and tubs for visitors and locals to feast their eyes on.
One of the latest additions to her showpieces is a bench on the edge of the town.
Made out of solid oak, the object is situated at entrance to the Cotswold Way and funding for the project came from the Country Show Committee, which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.
Commenting on her efforts, Councillor Quinn said: "We have a wonderful town but not very many open spaces. We call ourselves the greening group, made up of villagers from various organisations such as the gardening club.
"The great thing about the project is that people have responded by spontaneously getting out and weeding beds near them without being asked, which is marvellous. We couldn't possibly keep that up all year round."
The councillor is not the only one being kept busy by flowers.
This time of year, with Christmas fast approaching, can be a busy one for florists as people take advantage of their services to make their homes more attractive or to create gifts for friends and family members. |
