The Story of the Motorhome

Well, these vehicles certainly did not just come about overnight. The caravan existed long before the motorhome did and it was this that first paved the way. Caravans were initially reserved for circus performers or showmen in the early 1800s and were not used by holidaymakers until much later on. They also became the vehicle of choice amongst Gypsies and by 1850 most Romany’s had their own ‘vardos’ to accommodate their roving lifestyle. But it wasn’t until around 1910 that someone had the idea of combining a caravan with a truck body...
The first examples of this were seen in Canada. And by the 1920s, vehicle manufacturers were creating the first wave of motorhomes for the general public. The original ‘motorised caravans’ may have been somewhat clunky affairs, but like any other invention, they would go on to become far better over time. A good motorhome is put together with convenience in mind and by the mid 1950s manufacturers were becoming increasingly clued-in to the requirements of their customers. Initial design problems were being ironed out and far more was now centred around practicality. These vintage camper vans were very thoughtfully put together and are still used by many travellers even today.
Modern motorhomes continue to employ new innovations and to offer their owners a maximum degree of comfort, convenience and luxury. Advances in technology have made it possible to include many more creature comforts in the design of today’s vehicles and they are now better than ever before. Showers, televisions, sound systems, DVD players and even games consoles are all popular features in the motorhomes of the twenty-first century! All in all, there is very little in a brick-built home that cannot be replicated or incorporated into the design of a modern motorhome.
But, in one way, the amount of gadgetry or convenience we have installed into our motorhomes is irrelevant. When we have our own vehicle to accommodate us whilst we are taking our holiday, it will become our ‘second home’. It doesn’t matter if it is incredibly basic inside or full of ‘state of the art equipment’; it is still where we will eat, sleep and spend a good deal of our time whilst we are away. Bearing this in mind, it is incredibly important to keep it as safe as possible. This means having high quality locks on doors, secure windows and a good motorhome insurance policy in place.
Just what motorhomes of the future will be like is an exciting prospect indeed. No doubt they will offer their owners an even higher degree of comfort and there is bound to be plenty of cutting edge technology involved. But one thing is for sure when we think about the ‘motorised caravans’ in the years to come; they are certainly going to remain just as popular as they are now! |
