Digital Photography - Tips, Ideas and Techniques for Photographing Weddings
|
Photographing weddings is now a good source of profit for photography. It has been so popular and particular that "Wedding Photography" can stand on its own as a category or specialization. Whether you are a guest or a commissioned photographer, it is important that you know certain photography techniques with the goal of capturing the most memorable moments of the husband and wife to be.
Here are some helpful digital photography tips for photographing weddings:
- You must be aware of the wedding schedule including the church program and the flow of the reception. Having a pre-wedding shoot is also essential to complete your wedding photography package. Make sure you schedule your shoot and discuss the concept with the couple ahead of time. Contact the coordinator the day before the shoot to confirm the time and attendance of all participants.
- Preparing for wedding photography involves not only preparing your gear; you should also be ready for unexpected changes in weather. Make sure you bring umbrellas, plastic covers for your equipment, and cloth in the event your equipment get a little wet. Also, don't forget to bring a change of clothes.
- Dress appropriately. It would be good to invest on fancy shoes that not only look good but are comfortable. Be aware of the appropriate attire as you wouldn't want to wear a suit for a Hawaiian themed wedding or wear black in a Chinese wedding, which is a big no no. You should shave your facial hair and have a clean trim.
- Be friendly to everyone including the helpers, make up artists and the guests. Respect the solemnity of the wedding, keeping movement at a minimum during the marriage rites and using natural light as much as possible because using a flash can be distracting to the couple.
- Always carry spares. Always bring extra batteries for your flash, memory cards, and an extra camera if possible.
Digital photography techniques for capturing the special moments in a wedding:
- Give time and space between photographing your subjects so they wouldn't be so self-conscious. Use a telephoto lens mounted on a tripod so you'll be able to capture your subjects from a distance and so they won't notice you are there. Doing this will help your photographs tell a story and help show the true character of your subjects as opposed to having the ordinary poses.
- Use a wide angle lens to capture the drama in huge detail.
- Use a fast telephoto lens when capturing candid portraiture. This type of lens is also useful for uncluttering a untidy background.
- Don't forget to take a photo of the wedding rings, the bride's shoes, the flowers, and other little details of the wedding. If the wedding is on a specific location like the beach or in a garden, make sure to incorporate the landscape and the flavor of the location in your photographs.
- Finally, be creative with your composition. Add variety and motion by shooting in different perspectives. Add diagonals in your composition instead of always keeping a landscape or portrait format. However, like in all techniques, avoid over doing it.
As a bonus idea, after the wedding ceremonies when the the newly weds are posing for photographs, turn around and photograph the people taking the pictures! With all the digital photography tips and techniques provided here, you can now be confident in doing your first wedding photography project! |
