Choose bronze letterboxes, says Phil Spencer

A mail box is one of the first things potential buyers will see when coming to view your home so it should always make a great first impression.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Phil Spencer believes the among other changes you can make to your home, the best type of mail box to add value should be made from a material such as bronze.

Of course the front door is the first thing many people will see when calling at your home, so Phil advises complementing the brass letter box with a new doorknob and even a new stainless steel house number. If you need inspiration on how to update your front door area, have a walk around and look at other mail boxes and front doors in the area. Phil admits he has cycled around taking photographs of doors and mail boxes for ideas.

The front of the house is obviously going to make a big impression on visitors so another suggestion Phil makes is to pave over the front drive to make the area as neat as possible.

Other ways that you can value to the home include converted the loft or the garage into an extra bedroom or bathroom. In addition, the living space may be extended by building a conservatory that extends the style of the rest of the house.

The kitchen and bathroom are the main rooms that need to look good to appeal to the majority of buyers. If you cannot afford to knock down walls, work with what you have got. In addition, if you cannot afford planning permission to extend the kitchen out into the garden, apply for it anyway. Once granted, the buyer will be able to see the possibilities for themselves and the fact they can define the final outcome of the new kitchen may actually appeal to them.
