Becoming a REAL guitar hero

One of the more incredible recent marketing phenomena has been the success of ‘guitar playing’ software, whereby the games user can feel as if he or she is playing one of the electric guitars in a band. Whilst this can be great fun it is surely no match for playing the real instrument.

At Fret Music we would like to encourage everybody, including those who would claim not to be ‘musical’, to start playing real instruments, including electric guitars. If you love listening to music (and have the patience to get to grips with computer games!) you will be amazed at how quickly you can make progress on an instrument of your choice.

Admittedly a guitar does demand some degree of physical exertion and dexterity in order to progress. However, most players new to the guitar can usually get to grips straight away with a chord that involves holding down just one or two strings on the fret board whilst performing a basic strum with the other hand. This can be used to accompany somebody singing a melody (or one’s own voice if feeling brave), or to play along with a favourite piece of recorded music. Simple melodies can also be learnt fairly easily, particularly if they involve playing on one string.

These are first steps but it is worth remembering that all guitarists, know matter how famous or dextrous they are today, will have found the guitar a physically difficult instrument to play at first.

To help the novice guitarist, there are many technological and marketing developments readily available. Electric guitar packages, for example, provide an all-in great value combination of electric guitar, amp, and other necessary accessories including an electronic string tuner.

Of course, you can stay entrenched in the fantasy world of computer games, but why not take a daring step into the real world of guitar playing...?
