Calling all experienced guitarists: time to upgrade

Experienced amateur guitar players will sometimes regard an investment in a more expensive model as an unnecessary extravagance. This is a mistake, and one which can potentially hold them back from future progression.

Guitars at the cheaper end of the market will not necessarily be as poorly put together as some of the more over-dramatic pundits would have the rest of us believe. Nevertheless, the fact remains that they are cheaper because certain corners have been cut, either in the materials used or in their construction.

Whilst these refinements would probably be wasted on an inexperienced novice, for the guitar player with the ability to show off a trick or two, their absence could lead to frustration and disappointment while performing or auditioning.

A more expensive guitar will usually possess a neck and fret board that are expertly shaped so as to enhance the skilled guitarist’s ability to move swiftly over the fret board’s range with speed and dexterity. In addition, the guitar’s overall construction will usually be more robust, with, for example, a machine head that is less reluctant to cause strings to lose their tension and become out of tune following the more physical string manipulations associated with advanced playing.

Of all the qualities in a guitar that can really be exploited by the experienced guitarist, tone is the one quality that is perhaps hardest to define. Whilst most cheap guitars will have a tone that is still rounded and listenable, more expensive guitars, with bodies or sound boxes that are usually made of a single, quality wood, will enable the advanced guitarist to fully demonstrate his or her control and artistry by adding depth, colour and resonance to every note.

Rest assured however that ‘more expensive’ need not mean ‘exorbitant’. At Fret Music we stock a great range of affordable guitars aimed at the more advanced player.
