Lower charge: a sign of fading battery life

Finding that you need a replacement laptop battery should never be a shock, yet people are always caught out. Over time, your laptop battery will hold less and less charge. One day, the lack of charge will overwhelm the convenience of the laptop and a desperate hunt for a replacement begins. Keeping an eye on your battery charge can give you much more forewarning that a replacement is needed.

If you update your laptop every year or so, you may never have need of a replacement laptop battery. Even when treated in the worst way possible, a laptop battery should last up to 18 months. If you want your laptop to hold resale value, or use previous models as back-ups, then battery charge becomes more important. Of course, there are always spare batteries for laptops, and you can discuss this with us at Laptop Power UK, but it is in your interest to know when your battery is likely to die.

When you first purchase your laptop battery, take a note of the first charge and how long it lasts. The first charge for a battery for a laptop is a benchmark you can hold it to down the track. From then on, keep track of the amount of charge the laptop battery holds, taking a note every six weeks or so. This can help you plot out when a new battery is likely to be needed.

It's a good idea to note the circumstances of your battery charge, such as use of multimedia functions or length of time the battery sat before use. These are factors that will affect your discharge. Li-Ion batteries should provide between 300 and 500 discharges. Although it's impractical to keep track of this many discharge cycles, noting charge patterns ensures battery death won't come as a nasty shock.
