Keep your laptop power cables safe

Laptop chargers are one of the most vulnerable parts of your laptop. Unlike some other vulnerable parts, however, your laptop power supply won't show signs of trouble until it no longer actually works. Keyboards and screens will give you the odd subtle hint that they're on the way out, with stuck keys or increasing flickers. Laptop adapters usually simply cut out.

Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way to protect your laptop adapter from harm. There are some contingencies you can cater for:

• High temperatures. Like your battery, laptop power cables are vulnerable to extremes of temperature. You can't operate a laptop for very long without noticing that laptop adaptors heat up when they're in use. This is part of their natural function, but you shouldn't let them get too hot. Ensure they are in a well-ventilated area where the heat can dissipate for their continued function. While they're not as vulnerable to temperature as batteries, it's also a good idea not to leave power cables in the car on a hot day

• Duress. Many power cables fail because they've been yanked or tripped over too many times. Be gentle and never put pressure on the cable

• Rodents. It may come as a surprise, but rats, mice and even pet rabbits can have a detrimental effect on your laptop adaptor. Rodents love a nibble on long, vine-like things like power cables, to the detriment of both the cable and the unfortunate rodent

There are some things that you can't save your laptop charger from, like children and lawn mowers. Short of buying some PVC tubing for further insulation or only using your adapter in a locked and sealed room, there will be times when you need a new power cable, and you can talk to us at Laptop Power UK when you do.
