Some Pointers when Learning How to Read with Hooked on Phonics

If you are not yet familiar with a strategy that helps you teach preschool kids how to read then it is time for you to learn about Hooked on Phonics. This is a program that helps the young reader learn the various sounds in order to begin learning how to read. It is not a complicated program so the young learner will not have a difficult time acquiring the different skill sets.
The system provides you with a variety of materials that will lead to more learning. You will be able to use discs for the audio instructions and flash cards to help you teach the letters, words and develop techniques for reading. There are also books, work books, stickers and charts as well as motivational awards.
Here are some pointers in using Hooked on Phonics to teach your children how to read:
1. Assess the reading level of your child. Some children have more advanced skills for their age, while others may be lagging behind. There is nothing to worry about kids who may be falling behind because this program is designed specifically to help you reach problem areas you cannot do something about on your own. What's good about Hooked on Phonics is that learning comes in small portions, so the child doesn't get choked up with the lessons that easily.
2. Find the time to work on the lessons. Schedule a specific time of your day to turn this into a fun learning session wherein the kid feels more like he's playing rather than studying. Make sure you create a fun environment that will address the child's short attention span. Build up his enthusiasm by using activities that are included in the program as well as creating your own.
3. Do not forget to listen to the audio instructions. Use the flash cards while listening to the disc and make sure that you show your child how each letter sounds. It is also important that he learns how to speak out the alphabet and get to memorize it. Aid your child through the process of sounding off each letter so the child will be able to remember the sounds and connect them with the symbol or name of the letters.
4. Use the flash cards to reinforce recognition of certain sight words. These are words commonly used in a lot of books.
5. Don't just use the books, use the workbooks as well so that you can help your child practice the new skills he has acquired in reading. Always remember that you also read to him short stories and allow him to try reading these stories on his own. Check for comprehension, if you can, afterwards.
6. Use positive reinforcement as much as possible and never fail to praise the child if he is able to master a skill or surpassed a certain level.
7. One thing you have to remember is that learning with Hooked on Phonics does not have to be contained at home. You can easily bring the discs and the books with you wherever you go so that the learning doesn't stop because of some activities that might hinder you to do your sessions. |
