Nutritional needs of cats 'vary with age'

Cats are one of the most popular pets in many countries and they are loved for their cute appearances, playful nature and independence. However, pet owners do not always take proper care of their furry companions.

For example, due to a lack of knowledge, some people do not provide appropriate cat nutrition. When these creatures are at the stage of being a kitten, their needs concerning sustenance are different compared with when they reach adulthood. Indeed, cat nutrition has to change throughout the lifetimes of the animals if they are to remain healthy.

Writing on petside.com, medical specialist Denise Elliott said a kitten needs high levels of calories and protein, as well as plenty of calcium and phosphorous.

The expert, who is based at The Pet Hospital in Portland, Oregan, suggested that such young felines should receive specially formulated food. However, as they age, their needs evolve, Ms Elliot added.

Meanwhile, Amy Zalcman from NYC Veterinary Specialists pointed out that as cats grow older, they need fewer calories. She remarked: "This is an arc downward from weaning."

Unlike dogs, cats' protein needs do not decline so it is important that they have sufficient levels of the substance. This helps them to maintain a healthy muscle mass and metabolism.

These days, there is a wealth of information available over the web to help pet owners find out what they should be feeding their animals. Of course, vets also come in handy for this, as they have detailed knowledge concerning the anatomical requirements of a variety of creatures.

Meanwhile, as well as sourcing food and treats from shops in the traditional way, a rising number of consumers are now taking advantage of opportunities to source such offerings over the web. This is often seen as more convenient and it can also be cheaper. In addition, price savings can be achieved.
