Often when a laptop cuts out, it's due to the laptop power supply. It can be incredibly hard to tell this, however, especially if the laptop refuses to boot up. Finding the power problem before you take the machine down to a repair shop can save you a lot of time and money. For this reason, it's important for every laptop owner to know how to test laptop chargers.

If the problem does turn out to be your power supply, it's an easy enough problem to fix. Laptop adapters are one of the cheapest and easiest parts to replace. You can find replacement laptop power cables with us at Laptop Power UK. Before you do, however, here's what to test:

• Is it plugged in to a working outlet? 'User error' is a common joke in the tech world, but everyone has their less-than-attentive moments. Even Bill Gates has probably been tricked by a faulty power outlet or a tripped safety switch

• Unplug the adaptor and remove your battery. If your machine has been on, make sure everything you need on the desktop has been saved before you do this, as it will cut all power from the laptop

• Check the battery. Have a quick look at the battery for corrosion or damage. Sometimes the problem is with the battery itself, rather than the charger

• Plug the adaptor back in. Testing the adaptor without the battery in the machine is the best way to see if the problem lies with laptop adaptors. If it still works, shut down, unplug again, put the battery back in, and replug

• Charge without turning the machine on. The final test is to see if the laptop will charge while the machine is off. If it does, you still have a faulty adaptor, but the problem's not as urgent
