Dog Training Tips

Training a new dog can be one of the most frustrating experiences in a person’s life if they do not know what they are doing. This is proven time and time again by people of all ages. The key, when training a dog, is patience. Just like a person does not learn to walk just by being told, a dog cannot learn to do any range of skills without being shown how to do them.

Many people believe that if you give a dog a treat after they perform the way that they are expected then the dog is trained. While this is fundamentally true, the training described here is actually doing more harm than good; the dog becomes conditioned to think that every time it performs as expected, it will get a treat. This can cause major headaches for both human and dog, as the dog will become upset and likely will not perform again if it discovers that it will in fact not get a treat every time it complies. A better way to train in this manner is instead of giving a treat give the dog praise for what it has done. Act happy and excited about the dog’s performance, and it will be more likely to repeat that performance again.

Another training technique that is doomed to failure is when a person yells and forces a dog to bend to their will. This can be considered a type of abuse, as yelling is highly disruptive to a dog’s sensitive hearing, and being forceful with a dog may physically harm it. Instead, a person should treat their dog with love and affection, as this will get a much more positive response. This does not, however, mean people should not be firm with their dogs when they disobey; after all, how else will a dog learn what is good or bad in the eyes of its owner if it is not told as much?

People can, even unintentionally, turn normally mild-mannered dogs into vicious ones by being rough with them during their training. A person should treat a dog like they would treat a child. Yes children need to get a firm talking to every so often, but getting roughed up should never be part of the punishment. The same should be true for dogs as well. Treating a dog with love and attention is by far the most lasting investment a person can make with their dog; a dog will always be there for its owner, as long as its owner is there for it.
