Why Is Sleep Important?

Whilst we don’t always consciously acknowledge it, sleep is as important to keeping us healthy and alive as food and water is. Sleep improves all of our cognitive functions, improves the health of our body and also gives us our moods a lift at the same time. So, having good quality sleep is important to every aspect of our health.

Not only does getting the right amount and the right quality of sleep help prolong our lives, but sleep also aids more simple but necessary things such our ability to learn and retain information, whilst improving our moods and memory in general. Physically, it also helps our bodies to recover should they be facing any health problems, no matter whether or not we are consciously aware of them. Not only will good sleep help fight off infection and repair damaged cells but it also helps the heart to regulate blood pressure and cholesterol ensuring developing problems is less likely.

Sleep also helps reduce stress and control our weight, and after a good night’s sleep we will not only be happier and more positive, but we will also be much more aware, have quicker reactions and be able to form thoughts much more clearly than should we be tired.

In all, sleep is invaluable and getting good quality sleep is hugely important. To do this it is important to make sure that you don’t skimp by buying a cheap mattress but instead make sure that you purchase one that is going to help you get the sleep that you very much need. A mattress made out of visco-elastic foam (or memory foam) for instance will ensure that your body is fully supported, and supported evenly, giving you the chance to relax fully. A mattress not made of visco-elastic foam can often put unnecessary pressure on body parts meaning that simply turning over can easily rouse you and mean that the quality of your sleep is vastly reduced.
