Sporting Events to Discover in Manchester this Spring

Manchester has always been well known as a sporting city, so it won’t surprise you to hear that the spring of 2011 offers plenty of world-class events for sports fans.

One of the earliest events to take place in Manchester this spring is the flagship British Gas Swimming Championships (50m), which takes place between 5th and 12th March at Manchester Aquatics Centre on 2 Booth Street East. This event is the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the UK’s best swimmers as they compete for the ultimate prize. There is an extremely limited supply of tickets, so purchase yours immediately to avoid disappointment.

Another of the big sporting events to discover in Manchester this spring is the Bupa Great Manchester Run, which is set to take place this year on Sunday 15th May. Covering 10 kilometres in the streets of Manchester city centre, this is one of the UK’s most prestigious and largest mass participation runs. With places being so keenly sought, an entry limit of 38,000 people has been imposed, meaning that the Run will make for quite a spectacle when it is televised live on the BBC.

Some other sporting events include the Manchester to Liverpool bike ride for the NSPCC. Set to take place in 2011 on 29th May, the ride is now in its seventh year and starts at Salford Quays, taking in Old Trafford and Stretford before leaving Manchester for the Trans-Pennine Trail. This is a largely traffic-free route that allows you to see part of the Manchester Ship Canal on your way to Merseyside. It is possible to phone for an application form or apply online if you would like to get involved.

Another thing that you could never overlook is that Manchester is home to two Premiership football clubs that bear the city’s name, Manchester United and Manchester City. Spring is the time of the year when the Premiership title battle reaches its climax, with eye-catching home fixtures during the season including Manchester City v Tottenham on 16th April and Manchester United’s clash with defending champions, Chelsea on 7th May. The spring is also when the UEFA Champions League rolls into the city again, with Manchester United hosting Marseille on 15th March.

Author Resource:- Here are just the few of the sporting events taking place in the city this spring. Once the action is over you may be interested in booking a few nights at a local hotel, such as The Midland Hotel Manchester .
