Taking Post Workout Supplements

Research has shown how important post workout supplementation is. Supplement companies have followed suit and has produced a multitude of post workout supplements. Your muscles are starving for nourishment after a workout for the nutrients they need to repair themselves and grow. We all know that training actually destroys muscle tissue. It is when you get out of the gym and recover that creates the growth.

The best time to take your post workout supplement is immediately following training. The faster you can get the carbohydrates and aminos into your body to accelerate the recovery process, the better. Your odds of any nutrients being deposited as body fat will be minimal or zero at this point. Protein synthesis is heightened after training, so it would benefit athletes to consume not only high amounts of carbohydrates, but also high amounts of protein to accelerate the recovery process.

The harder you train, the more important it is to get those much need nutrients into your muscles. Some bodybuilders use their post workout window as their biggest meal. Ideally, they would have their post workout shake, then about a half hour to an hour later, have a good meal.

Common sense tells us that liquid calories are digested faster than whole foods. Bodybuilders have been taking in their first post workout meals as liquids for years. Usually this liquid meal consisted of protein and carbs. These days post workout supplements contains specific types of proteins and carbohydrates along with a myriad of other compounds to enhance recovery. Gone are the days of eating chicken and rice first thing after training.
What are some of the best post workout supplements?

You would think that there are tons of post workout supplements out there, but there aren't. There are a handful of decent ones on the market, and this particular niche of supplements continues to grow so in time you will see better formulations hit the shelves. Some of the the better products are Biorhythm Afterglow, Optimum Nutrtion 211 Recovery, and Scivation Xtend.

I highly recommend a post workout supplement if you aren't currently taking one. It could pay big dividends in the long run.
