A History of the Roulette Wheel
|
Roulette is a game of chance that originated in France during the 17th century. In French, roulette literally translates to "small wheel." The roulette wheel is the creation of the French mathematician Blaise Pascal, who is also renowned for inventing an adding machine and contributing to the theory of probability. In 1655, Pascal invented the roulette wheel primarily as kind of entertainment for monks living in monasteries.
The roulette wheel eventually reached Paris, where it was first used for moneymaking purposes aside from being a source of entertainment. Roulette became a popular game among the VIP's and other French elite. The roulette wheel was also installed on casinos to generate income. In 1842, brothers Francois and Luis Blanc established the first casino in Monte Carlo. They also developed the Single Zero roulette game mechanics. There are some myths that surround the history of roulette and intertwine with facts. Legend tells that the Blanc brothers apparently sold their souls to the devil in exchange for the secrets of roulette. Interestingly, the numbers of the roulette when added together total to 666, the number of the beast.
The roulette wheel known today is different from Blaise Pascal's original model. The modern roulette wheel, with alternating red and black colors as well as odd and even numbers, was also developed in France. Roulette final made a hit in America during the Gold Rush period. When American gold miners fell in love with roulette, casino owners realized the income-generating potential of the sensational game. To increase income, American casino owners added a 38th number slot to the standard European roulette with 37 slots. Adding an extra zero resulted to the development of the so-called Double Zero roulette game. With more compartments, the odds favoured the casino owners and made winning harder for players. As a result, more players preferred the European Roulette over the American Wheel.
In the current times, roulette remains a favorite among casino gaming enthusiasts. In fact, roulette is one of the most popular games on the casino floor and the wheel itself has been used as the official logos of numerous casinos. The development of the internet has made it possible to play roulette online. Playing in online casinos is much like playing in land-based ones, with basically the same rules and betting procedures.
Roulette's simplicity of gameplay has made it appealing even to people who do not gamble often. In roulette, the player makes a wager on a single number or multiple numbers and places chips on the corresponding compartments. The croupier then starts the wheel spinning and rolls a small ball on the revolving wheel. The winning number is compartment where the ball will come to a complete stop. Whoever picked the particular number will take home the winnings. The winnings are decided based on a payout chart that can be found in casinos or displayed onscreen for online roulette versions. There are different kinds of bets according to how many numbers the player waged on. Although the single number bet has the largest payout at 35:1, it is obviously the hardest to win. |
