Aluminum anodes for platforms:
Aluminum anodes are nowadays being increasingly used for platforms and other large structures, cast on pipe-cores with bulk trapezoidal cross-sections. These anodes come with low Iron (Fe) content to ensure better activation in low temperature environment. It protects the platform or pipeline when connected for the designed life of the cathodic protection system. These are usually designed as an effective, general purpose offshore alloy, for use in tropical water environments.
Aluminum anodes for offshore pipelines:
Similarly, aluminum anodes are used as bracelets for offshore pipelines. They are cast in water-cooled molds for diameters up to 48 inches. They are usually available in welded, tapered and bolted varieties. However, before buying any of these anode varieties always look out for those manufacturers or suppliers that have a long resume of excellence in producing quality anodes. Magnesium anodes can be used for similar purpose in fresh water.
Aluminum anodes for marine hulls:
The aluminum anodes can also be used for marine hulls, cast to be attached with bolts or welders. Most of the manufacturers dealing in varied types of anodes have foundries that are purpose-built facilities, to produce anodes with very specific chemical compositions, to meet any code requirement. Zinc anodes are equally good to suit this requirement in marine hulls.
Aluminum anodes for pier and piling:
Then there are aluminum sacrificial anodes that are used in piers and pilings, cast to fit any marine jetty-type structure. Zinc boats also perform the same function but they are better off in salt water environment.
Aluminum anodes for tanks:
Aluminum anodes are also used for cathodic protection of ballast tanks and process vessel interiors. For the better performance of these types of anodes it is always necessary to see that they are produced only in ISO 9000 certified foundries. These are ideal for use in tropical water environments.
