Preparing For a BMX Race

There is more to preparing for a BMX race than simply buying a brand new bike. Even if you are extremely fit and have the best racing BMX on the market, understanding the sport itself is crucial to doing the best that you can.

Riding a racing BMX is totally different to riding a normal bike, and the race itself will be much more mentally draining than a normal race, so it is important that you are not only physically trained for it but also mentally.

Getting out on your bike every day is a good place to start, if possible visiting different tracks so you can start to get to know the best way to attack any given course. The jumps that will be involved will differ from track to track and having the best knowledge of how to handle different terrains will put you in a much better position when it comes to your first race.

Getting your balance right is integral. For those who haven’t raced a BMX before it may not be instantly obvious that the best start will be one from which you already have both feet on the pedals. If you can get your balance right before the race you will have a much better chance of getting the very best start you can.

Understand where your focus should be. Right from the off, focus on the next jump or bend. On the jumps keep low as you will have much more speed that way, even if it feel more impressive to go as high as you can – after all it is a race not a chance to show off.

Finally only be as aggressive as you need to be. Being aggressive will make you a target but don’t let others get away with murder – hold your ground firm and you will be in with the best shot of winning.
