Motivating Children

Teaching is about a lot more than simply imparting knowledge and trying to get children to learn. The best teachers are educational role models, exhibiting an interest in learning and an enthusiasm for all aspects of education.

Therefore, children’s learning will be directly affected by how the teacher conducts them self in the class room. The most positive teachers will be the ones who students find with the most positive attitude towards learning. It is also important that teachers do not show favouritism towards children’s personalities (even if it can be very tempting to do so).

However, rewards such as school stickers are a good way to increase motivation of children. Stickers are very simple but can have a profound affect on the way that children approach learning, feeling that they really have been rewarded for trying their best. However, rewards such as stickers should not necessarily just be for those getting the top marks, as it is unfair to those with less ability. Instead, rewards should be for those who have simply tried their hardest or have outdone themselves. People with less ability or attention disorders often have less incentive to succeed as they have to work harder, and even when they put in their best effort they may see others being rewarded and not them. It is therefore important to ensure that school stickers and rewards are focussed purely on effort and are not just about the results.

Ultimately, to motivate children, the teacher has to be positive in his or her approach and honestly believe that they can help every single person in their class to learn. Being consistent and treating everyone fairly and as an equal is the best way to ensure children give you the most respect and in turn try their hardest to succeed.
